When women affected by trauma give birth

This further training is aimed at members of the health professions such as doctors, psychologists, psychotherapists, non-medical practitioners, obstetricians and specialized nurses and also at advisory professional groups such as social and remedial educators, pastors, life coaches, breastfeeding consultants, maternity nurses, educators and refugee workers.

This workshop is the culmination of decades of collaboration between Penny Simkin, PT, CCE, CD (DONA) and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, LMSW. The content conveys a basic understanding of the consequences of early trauma or sexualized violence on pregnant women and women giving birth, recognizing the symptoms of trauma and accompanying trauma-sensitive people. The focus is on trauma-sensitive support and first-aid techniques in birth situations, which can be used to prevent re-traumatization.

In addition to theoretical inputs, there is mainly self-awareness of the principles through exercises in large and small groups. If the participants are interested and willing to do so, demonstrations can also take place.

• deepening understanding for pregnant women affected by trauma and for their families.
• expanding skills and competences in working with women who are at risk of poor physical and psychosocial childbirth experiences.
• reflecting and improving your response when working with women who express emotional concerns and fears about childbirth.
